What an NDIS support worker does
Every support is built around you and your plan goals. A support worker can help with:
- Personal care: showering, dressing, grooming and using the toilet
- Help at home: cooking meals, laundry, dishes and keeping on top of things
- Getting out: appointments, shopping, work, study, social events and activities
- Building skills: learning to cook, catch public transport or manage money
- Overnight support: someone with you overnight, asleep or awake, depending on your needs
Need a full house clean or work in the garden? Search NDIS cleaners or NDIS gardeners instead. Every support worker must follow the NDIS Code of Conduct, whether they’re registered with the NDIS or not.
Which part of your plan pays for it
Support workers are paid from your Core budget. Look for these names in your plan:
| What your plan says | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Assistance with Daily Life | Personal care, help at home and overnight support |
| Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation | Support to get out to activities, events, work and study |

What NDIS support workers cost
For 2026-27, the NDIS price limit for standard personal care on a weekday daytime is $73.58 an hour. Evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays have higher limits. If you’re plan-managed, they can’t charge more than the limit. If you’re self-managed, you agree the price together. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you’ll need a registered provider.
Independent support workers on Solotude set their own rates, so ask about price when you message them.
Price limits are reviewed every year in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.
How many support worker hours can your funding buy?
Type in how much Core funding you want to spend on a support worker each week. We’ll show you how many hours that buys.
Estimate only. Based on the 2026-27 NDIS price limit of $73.58 an hour for standard weekday daytime support. Evenings, weekends and higher-intensity support cost more, so you’d get fewer hours. If your plan shows a yearly amount, divide it by 52. We set aside 15% of your funding for travel and admin, because most providers charge for these.
What Solotude checks for support workers
Before a support worker appears in search, we check their photo ID, their ABN and the NDIS Commission’s compliance records.
Many support workers also add an NDIS Worker Screening Check or a Working with Children Check. We verify those too, and you can filter your search to only see support workers who hold them. Read how it works in our Verification Policy.

Frequently asked questions
Can I choose my own NDIS support worker?
Yes. If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can choose exactly who supports you, including independent support workers. On Solotude you can read profiles and message workers before you decide. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you need to choose a registered provider.
What checks do NDIS support workers need?
Workers employed by registered NDIS providers need an NDIS Worker Screening Check for most roles. On Solotude, you can filter for support workers with a verified Worker Screening Check. Every support worker, registered or not, must follow the NDIS Code of Conduct. Before you start, ask any worker what checks and qualifications they hold.
What qualifications do you need to be an NDIS support worker?
There is no qualification the NDIS requires for every support worker. Many hold a Certificate III or IV in Individual Support or Disability, plus first aid and CPR. Some supports, like complex personal care, need extra training. Ask about experience and training when you message a worker.
How much do NDIS support workers charge?
For 2026-27, the NDIS price limit for standard personal care on a weekday daytime is $73.58 an hour. Evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays have higher limits. If you’re plan-managed, workers can’t charge more than the limit. If you’re self-managed, you agree the price with your worker.
How do I pay an independent support worker?
Agree a rate and put it in a service agreement. If you’re self-managed, you pay the worker and claim it from your plan. If you’re plan-managed, the worker sends their invoice to your plan manager, who pays them for you.
Can a family member be my paid support worker?
Usually not. The NDIS only funds a family member to provide paid support in exceptional circumstances. Talk to your planner or support coordinator if you think this applies to you.
Can someone on the NDIS be a support worker?
Yes. Having an NDIS plan doesn’t stop you working as a support worker. You need to meet the same requirements as anyone else.
