How it usually works

  • Starting with the biggest safety risks, like blocked exits or trip hazards
  • Working one small area at a time
  • You decide what stays and what goes
  • Sorting items to keep, donate, recycle or throw away
  • Building routines to keep on top of it
  • Working alongside your therapist, if you have one
Good decluttering support goes at your pace. Being pushed to get rid of things quickly rarely lasts, and can be distressing. A good worker will be patient, respectful and let you lead.

When it’s funded

The NDIS may fund decluttering support where your disability, like hoarding disorder or another psychosocial disability, makes it hard to keep your home safe. It’s usually linked to safety and building skills, not a one-off clean-out. Talk to your planner, LAC or support coordinator about whether it fits your plan.

Who provides decluttering?

Decluttering support is usually a mix. Support workers help with sorting and routines, cleaners help keep spaces clean, and a psychologist can help with the reasons behind it.

Who helps with NDIS decluttering?Support workers help with sorting and routines, cleaners help keep spaces clean, and psychologists can help with the reasons behind hoarding.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for decluttering? There are a few versions, but they all break decluttering into small steps, like choosing three items to let go from three areas. The idea is that small, regular steps are easier to stick with, which is also how good decluttering support works.
