What an NDIS physiotherapist does

A physio assesses how your body moves and treats what’s holding you back. An NDIS physio might help with:

  • Walking, balance and getting around
  • Strength and fitness
  • Pain and stiffness
  • Preventing falls
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Advice on walking aids, wheelchairs and other equipment
  • Chest physio to help with breathing

Physio or exercise physiologist?

A physio assesses and treats movement problems, often hands-on, and helps you recover. An exercise physiologist builds a longer-term exercise program to keep you strong and manage health conditions. Many people see a physio first, then move to an exercise physiologist.

Do you need a referral?

Not for NDIS-funded physio. If it’s in your plan, you can book a physio yourself. A GP referral is only needed if you’re using Medicare-funded sessions instead.

Which part of your plan pays for it

Physio is paid from your Capacity Building budget. Look for this name in your plan:

What your plan says What it covers
Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building, may show as CB Daily Activity) Physio sessions, assessments and home exercise programs

What NDIS physios cost

For 2026-27, the NDIS price limit for physiotherapy is $183.99 an hour. Therapists can also charge for time spent travelling to you, at up to half their hourly rate, and for some reports. Ask about this before you start. If you’re plan-managed, they can’t charge more than the limit. If you’re self-managed, you agree the price together. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you’ll need a registered provider.

Price limits are reviewed every year in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.

How many physio sessions can your funding buy?

Type in how much of your Capacity Building funding you want to spend on physio this plan year. We’ll show you how many one-hour sessions that buys.

0one-hour sessions a year

Estimate only. Based on the 2026-27 NDIS price limit of $183.99 an hour for standard sessions. If one amount in your plan covers several therapies, only enter the part you want to spend on physio. We set aside 15% of your funding for travel, reports and admin, because most providers charge for these.

What Solotude checks for physiotherapists

Before a physiotherapist appears in search, we check their photo ID, their ABN and the NDIS Commission’s compliance records. Physiotherapists must also hold current Ahpra registration, which we check on the national register.

Many physiotherapists also add an NDIS Worker Screening Check or a Working with Children Check. We verify those too, and you can filter your search to only see physiotherapists who hold them. Read how it works in our Verification Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is physio covered by the NDIS?

Yes, when it’s linked to your disability and helps with your plan goals, like walking, balance or managing pain. It’s usually paid from Improved Daily Living in your Capacity Building budget. Physio for a short-term injury that isn’t related to your disability is usually covered by Medicare or private health instead.

What’s the difference between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist?

A physio diagnoses and treats movement problems, often with hands-on therapy, and helps you recover. An exercise physiologist uses exercise programs to build strength and manage long-term health conditions. They don’t do hands-on treatment. Many people use both, one after the other.

How much does NDIS physio cost?

For 2026-27, the NDIS price limit for physiotherapy is $183.99 an hour. Physios can also charge for travel, at up to half their hourly rate. If you’re self-managed, you agree the price with your physio.

Do I need a referral to see an NDIS physio?

No. If physio is funded in your plan, you can book a physio yourself. You only need a GP referral for Medicare-funded sessions.

How do I get 5 Medicare-funded physio sessions?

If you have a chronic condition, your GP can set up a chronic condition management plan. It gives you a Medicare rebate for up to 5 allied health sessions a year, like physio. These sessions are separate from your NDIS funding. Ask your GP if you’re eligible.
