What an NDIS dietitian does

An NDIS dietitian helps you eat well and safely in a way that works with your disability. They might help with:

  • Managing a health condition through food, like diabetes or coeliac disease
  • Texture-modified diets for swallowing difficulties, often with a speech pathologist
  • Tube feeding and enteral nutrition
  • Meal plans that fit your routine, skills and budget
  • Weight changes linked to your disability or medication

What the NDIS won’t pay for

The NDIS pays for the dietitian’s time, not your food. Groceries are an everyday living cost. Some special nutrition products, like tube feeding formula, can be funded when they’re linked to your disability and included in your plan.

Dietitian or nutritionist?

Look for an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). APDs have a university degree in dietetics and are credentialed by Dietitians Australia. Nutritionists don’t have to meet the same standard, and the NDIS price limit is set for dietitians.

Which part of your plan pays for it

Dietitian support is paid from your Capacity Building budget. It can come from either of these:

What your plan says What it covers
Health and Wellbeing (older plans: Improved Health and Wellbeing) Dietitian support to manage your health
Improved Daily Living (may show as CB Daily Activity) Dietitian support to build skills for daily life

What NDIS dietitians cost

For 2026-27, the NDIS price limit for dietetics is $178.99 an hour, down from $188.99 in 2025-26. Therapists can also charge for time spent travelling to you, at up to half their hourly rate, and for some reports. Ask about this before you start. If you’re plan-managed, they can’t charge more than the limit. If you’re self-managed, you agree the price together. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you’ll need a registered provider.

Price limits are reviewed every year in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.

How many dietitian sessions can your funding buy?

Type in how much of your Capacity Building funding you want to spend on dietitian this plan year. We’ll show you how many one-hour sessions that buys.

0one-hour sessions a year

Estimate only. Based on the 2026-27 NDIS price limit of $178.99 an hour for standard sessions. If one amount in your plan covers several therapies, only enter the part you want to spend on dietitian. We set aside 15% of your funding for travel, reports and admin, because most providers charge for these.

What Solotude checks for dietitians

Before a dietitian appears in search, we check their photo ID, their ABN and the NDIS Commission’s compliance records. Membership of Dietitians Australia, as an Accredited Practising Dietitian, is highly recommended. Holding it is the dietitian’s own responsibility, and it shows on their profile as self-reported, so ask for their membership details before you start.

Many dietitians also add an NDIS Worker Screening Check or a Working with Children Check. We verify those too, and you can filter your search to only see dietitians who hold them. Read how it works in our Verification Policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NDIS fund a dietitian?

Yes, when the support is linked to your disability, like managing a health condition through food, tube feeding or swallowing difficulties. It’s paid from your Capacity Building budget, under Health and Wellbeing or Improved Daily Living.

Does the NDIS pay for special food or supplements?

Usually not. The NDIS pays for the dietitian’s time, not groceries or everyday food. Some special nutrition products, like tube feeding formula, can be funded when they’re linked to your disability and approved in your plan.

How much does an NDIS dietitian cost?

For 2026-27, the NDIS price limit for dietetics is $178.99 an hour, down from $188.99 the year before. Dietitians can also charge for travel, at up to half their hourly rate. If you’re self-managed, you agree the price together.

Is it better to see a dietitian or a nutritionist?

For NDIS support, see an Accredited Practising Dietitian. APDs have a university degree in dietetics and are credentialed by Dietitians Australia. Nutritionists don’t have to meet the same standard, and the NDIS price limit is set for dietitians.

Do I need a referral to see an NDIS dietitian?

No. If dietitian support is funded in your plan, you can book one yourself. A letter from your GP can help if you’re asking for funding at a plan review.

Do NDIS dietitians do home visits?

Many do, and some also offer telehealth. Ask when you message them. Dietitians can charge for travel to your home, at up to half their hourly rate, so check this before you book.
