Checking your counsellor

Counselling isn’t a regulated profession in Australia, so anyone can call themselves a counsellor. Look for qualifications in counselling and membership of a professional body, like the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). On Solotude, these are self-reported and labelled that way.

Counsellor or psychologist?

Counsellors are a good fit for emotional support, talking things through and building coping skills. Psychologists are registered with Ahpra, can do formal assessments and are better suited to complex or clinical needs. Counselling usually costs less per session.

Who provides counselling?

Counselling is provided by counsellors. If your needs are more complex, a psychologist may suit you better.

How much does NDIS counselling cost?

Therapy is usually paid from your Capacity Building budget, under Improved Daily Living. The NDIS sets an hourly price limit for each type of therapy, and it applies to time spent on assessments, sessions and writing reports. Therapists can usually also claim some travel time to come to you. Counselling usually costs less per hour than psychology. Every provider on Solotude shows their rate on their profile, so you know the cost before you message them. For current price limits, check the official NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.
